Places to Visit
There’s something for everyone on Exmoor.
Here are some of our favourite places to visit – we hope you love them as much as we do!
Dunster Castle & Watermill
Dunster Castle & Watermill are run by the National Trust in the historic village of Dunster, just a 10-minute drive from Orchard Escapes Exmoor. The ancient castle and country home promise a great day out for all the family, with dramatic vistas and a subtropical garden to explore. Afterwards, why not stroll around the village, visiting the many gift shops and eateries?
West Somerset Railway
Enjoy countryside and coastal views by steam train with West Somerset Railway. Step back in time and enjoy a nostalgic train ride on 20 miles of heritage railway from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard. Plan your visit online and look out for upcoming events and experiences at certain times of the year.
Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor
Are you feeling energetic? Walk from your base at Orchard Escapes Exmoor to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor, towering 1705 feet above sea level. You can see across the Bristol Channel to Wales on a clear day, along with striking views of the surrounding area. Don’t fancy the walk? Parking is close to Dunkery so you can enjoy a shorter walk to the top.
Lynton & Lynmouth
The delightful coastal villages of Lynton & Lynmouth have much to offer. A cliff railway joins the two villages – the only fully water-powered railway in the UK. Sit and enjoy fish & chips by the sea in Lynmouth, play mini golf or take a coastal boat cruise from Lynmouth Harbour. Take the cliff railway up to Lynton and meander around the gift shops or visit the quaint Lynton cinema. A short drive or walk from Lynton takes you to the Valley of Rocks. With superb coastal views and dramatic scenery, it is a must-do on your Exmoor visit.
Bossington Beach
A gentle 45-minute or brisk 30-minute walk from Orchard Escapes Exmoor is the chocolate box village of Bossington with its peaceful pebble beach. Sit on the shore and listen to the waves rippling over the pebbles, or venture up to Hurlstone Point with spectacular views, looking down onto the beach and further along to Porlock. If you want to unwind, this is the place to find peace.
Wider Exmoor
There are many more villages to visit and sights to see on Exmoor. Get up on the moors and walk for miles without seeing a soul. Just ask, and we will happily point you in the right direction and share some of our favourite Exmoor routes.
Exmoor Zoo
Exmoor Zoo is a 45-minute drive but a great chance to admire the beautiful Exmoor landscape along the way.
Explore the zoo trail and discover animals up close and personal. There are also many experiences to choose from. If you are passionate about animals, this is the place for you.
Tarr Steps
The iconic Tarr Steps is a clapper bridge across the River Barle, considered medieval in origin. Each of the stone slabs weighs up to two tons each.
It is a great spot to visit for a stroll along the river before heading to Tarr Farm Inn for a bite to eat or drink after your walk.
